Construction on lights at Mark Rosewell Tennis Center begins

Tennis players in the Maryville area will soon be able to beat the heat and play their sport later at night when the temperatures cool.

Work has begun on the installation of lights for the Frank Grube Tennis Courts located at the Mark Rosewell Tennis Center on the Northwest Missouri State campus. Northwest head tennis coach Mark Rosewell believes the lights will be a boost to his program as well as the tennis playing community.

"It's huge for our program, but it's just magnificent for our student population and the community itself as the high school uses our courts, too," Rosewell said. "With the pandemic, we're seeing a lot more people playing tennis, going back to like the '70s when the tennis boom was and so forth. And this is a good thing. Tennis is a lifetime sport. We want people playing out here and exercising, and in the summer it's hot. We can turn those lights on at 8:30 or 9 o'clock, it gets a little cooler, people are going to come out here and play."

The lights are the latest improvements to the tennis complex following the construction of the Rosewell pavilion and the addition of two courts. Rosewell said team work has made the improvements a reality.

"I have to give kudos to Dr. John Jasinski, because he's really helped us alot on all of this, as many others have. The booster club, our alumni, Mitzi helped us tremendously on the fundraising for the lights, and that's where a lot of that money is coming from. We want to make this tennis center one of the finest in the midwest, and show people that we have a strong tennis program."

The installation of lights at the Rosewell Tennis Center is expected to be completed by August 19.
